Professor Dr. Detlef Lohse now external scientific member of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization

Long-term collaboration leads to Max Planck Society membership

June 18, 2015
During the 66th general assembly of the Max Planck Society in Berlin on June 17-18, Prof. Dr. Detlef Lohse from Twente University, Netherlands, was appointed an external scientific member of the Gottingen Max-Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (MPIDS). With this step the MPIDS appreciates the intensive long-term collaboration between this internationally renowned physicist and the departments of the institute.

Detlef Lohse has been Professor for fluid physics at the University of Twente in Enschede (NL) since 1998. His research areas are strongly connected with those of the MPIDS, especially with the department of Fluid Dynamics, Pattern Formation and Biocomplexity led by director Prof. Dr. Eberhard Bodenschatz. While the Bodenschatz group investigates the turbulence of whole clouds experimentally at the Göttingen Turbulence Facility, Prof Lohse’s department works on the theoretical foundations of some of these experiments. He and his co-workers also conduct experiments on flows between rotating cylinders as in a turbine. One conclusion of the experiments both on the cloud models in Gottingen and the rotors in the Netherlands: is that in very strong turbulence, the flows in these systems are physically very similar.

„We are very happy to welcome such an excellent scientist as Detlef Lohse“, Eberhard Bodenschatz emphasizes Lohse received the George K. Batchelor Prize, which is awarded every four years, in 2012. The prize is regarded as the Nobel Prize of fluid dynamics. He also was awarded the Spinoza Prize, the Netherland equivalent of the German Leibniz Prize.
