Thomas Oppermann passed away
We deeply mourn the passing of Thomas Oppermann, Member and Vice President of the Bundestag. Thomas Oppermann was a member of the board of trustees of our institute and has actively accompanied and supported it since the late 1990s.
In the early 2000s, during his time as Minister of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony, Member of the Senate of the Max Planck Society and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the VW Foundation, he played a major role in the reorientation of our Max Planck Institute. At the end of 2004, our institute, founded in 1924 by Ludwig Prandtl, was renamed from "Max Planck Institute for Flow Research" to "Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization". In 2005 the institute moved to its new location on the Fassberg in Göttingen. Thomas Oppermann has often been instrumental in promoting these developments and has always been a strong supporter of our research. Still on May 19, 2020 he visited us together with Gabriele Andretta, President of the Lower Saxony State Parliament, to inform himself about our research on the propagation of Covid-19. Thomas Oppermann has always actively supported science in Lower Saxony and Germany and provided new impulses. We thank him for this. We will miss him very much.
