Chemical receptors located on motile cilia can break the diffusion limit.

Signalling particles (red) are captured and detected by receptors on a cilium (green). Receptors on a beating cilium, which transports the surrounding fluid, can have a significantly higher capture rate than receptors on a flat surface.
