Since the pioneering work of Helbing in the late 1990s, it has been customary in the field of Pedestrians Dynamics to represent a crowd as a system of many classical particles interacting by means of fictitious “social forces”. In recent years, however, an alternative approach inspired by cognitive heuristics has been proposed in order to overcome the necessity of introducing such fictitious forces.
In my Master’s thesis I adopted this latter approach to develop a model based on one fundamental observation: pedestrians rely primarily on their vision in order to anticipate the actions of other individuals and avoid potential collisions.
The results obtained from simulations show that at moderate-to-high densities the model is able to reproduce many important phenomena observed in real-life scenarios. These phenomena may be individual, such as the ability of a single pedestrian to find a path in a crowded environment, or collective, such as the formation of lanes in bidirectional and intersecting flows of pedestrians.
On the other hand, the behaviour of the model is not entirely satisfactory at very high densities, and further work is needed in this direction.
