In this talk, I will attempt to provide a quick introduction to the area of complex networks and give an overview of the scope of its application and its versatility as a tool. We will look at a number of examples, in diverse areas, where networks have been successfully applied as a tool to provide new insights and further our understanding. I talk about some classification schemes for networks and their different representations. After introducing the basic properties of networks and their corresponding metrics, I will bring up some of the popular generative models. We will also, very briefly, touch upon some physical and dynamical processes that occur on networks. I will conclude by presenting some work, concerning the effects of rewiring mechanisms in directed networks, that I have been doing as part of my doctoral research.
