Liquid crystalline blue phases are highly chiral nematic liquids that confined to thin layers exhibit numerous exotic structures. Modeling based on phenomenological free energy show that stable nematic orientational ordering fields are characterized by 2D lattices consisting of singular disclination lines and nonsingular double twisted solitonic structures that could be also partially entangled [1,2]. In analogy to reported skyrmion defects and lattices in thin layers of chiral magnets [3] we have few years ago predicted also a hexagonal lattice of half-skyrmions in thin layers of blue phases [4]. Full skyrmions were recently realized [5] and described [6] in unwound cholesteric liquid crystals in thin layers. In more details, I will here describe the half-skyrmion lattice and individual half-skyrmions recently realized in thin blue phase layers [7].
