"Marangoni Condensation on Pillared Substrates"

Marangoni drying has been extensively studied and commercialized in the past few decades but mostly with a localized vapour source, which is not a generic approach. In this work, we are studying Marangoni Condensation in a diffusion limited environment which is symmetric in nature.

In this system, I am condensing vapours of propylene glycol propyl ether into a pure water droplet. As a result, the lifetime of this droplet passes through various regimes, viz. evaporation, wicking, and drying. The characteristics of these regimes are shown to depend on the geometry of pillared substrates (aspect ratio and line fraction) and the percentage of vapours. This system illustrates a situation when the water droplet shows depinning and partial imbibition into pillared substrates due to the symmetric condensation of vapours in the bulk.
