Job Code: MPIDS-W068

Job offer from January 19, 2023

For the independent research group Theory of Biological Fluids headed by Dr. David Zwicker we seek to fill a Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d) in Biological Physics.

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization is an interna-tional research institute in Göttingen, Germany. It performs both experi-mental and theoretical fundamental scientific research and currently employs about 300 people.

The research

The research group aims to understand how biological organisms organize soft and fluid-like material. They currently focus on the organization princi-ples of liquid droplets in biological cells, but they are also interested in broader questions in biological physics. They generally combine analytical insight from simple systems with more detailed numerical simulations to unveil biological design principles. Additionally, they build tailored models to interpret experimental data of collaborators.
The offer project focuses on the role of viscoelasticity in the dynamics of droplets inside cells as part of a recently acquired ERC grant. We also sup-port successful candidates in shaping their own research direction.

Your profile

We are looking for excellent, enthusiastic, and self-motivated researchers with good communication skills to join our research team. The postdoctoral researcher should have a Ph.D. in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, or a related field as well as an interest in biological and soft matter physics.

Expertise in studying pattern formation, elasticity theory, statistical physics, or biological physics is a plus. Programming skills are highly desirable. Fluency in both written and spoken English is required. The researcher should show eagerness to learn new skills and apply established ones.

Our offer

We are offering excellent working conditions in a highly international and interdisciplinary research environment. The postdoctoral position is for one year initially with the possibility of extensions. Salary and working hours follow the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society for scientists: Working hours are fulltime; salary is E13 TVöD-Bund. Furthermore, we offer opportunities regarding work-life balance as well as health promotion ser-vices. The starting date is flexible.

The Max-Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepre-sented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

Your application

Please apply online with the reference no MPIDS-W068 and submit a cover letter, a CV, a list of publications, and contacts of three referees. Your cov-er letter should briefly describe your research interests, what excites you, and why you want to join our group. Applications received before 30th June 2023 will be given full consideration. Written applications will not be sent back.
