PhD position (m/f) - Statistical modeling of atmospheric turbulence

Job offer from December 18, 2018

In the Max Planck Research Group “Turbulence, Complex Flows & Active Matter” we seek as soon as possible to fill a PhD position (m/f) in the field of Statistical modeling of atmospheric turbulence.

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization at Göttingen, Germany, is an international research institute. It provides an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment performing both experimental and theoretical fundamental scientific research and currently employs about 300 people.

The research

The research of the independent Max Planck Research Group focuses on fundamental aspects of turbulent and complex flows. The aim of the PhD project is the investigation of atmospheric turbulence using analytical and numerical methods.

Your profile

We are looking for excellent, highly motivated early-career researchers to join our research team.

The ideal candidate should have a Master’s degree in physics with a background in complex systems, fluid dynamics and statistical physics. Programming skills as well as experience in the numerical simulation of nonlinear partial differential equations, parallel programming, and scientific visualization are a requirement. Fluency in English is expected.

Our offer

The PhD position is limited to three years. The salary and working hours are in accordance with the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society for junior scientists. The salary is 2/3 of E13 TVöD-Bund. In close collaboration with the Georg August University, a structured PhD program is offered in the graduate program on the Physics of Biological and Complex Systems.

Furthermore, we offer opportunities regarding work life balance as well as health promotion services.

The Max-Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
