Within the laboratory of the department “Fluid Physics, Pattern Formation and Biocomplexity” at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization we seek to fill 2 PhD positions for our research projects on fundamentals of cilia-based fluid flow.
The first project focuses on the bottom-up development of artificial cilia by assembling few building blocks adapted from natural cilia. These structures will be integrated into microfluidic devices to investigate fully synthetic fluid transport. We will test the system by using such flows for clearing pathogens (bacteria and mucus-like substances) out of the channel, thus preventing fouling of microfluidic devices.
In the second project we aim to use cilia/flagella isolated from Chlamydomonas to build a cilia carpet to investigate microfluidic application of cilia-driven directional fluid transport. The distal ends of isolated axonemes will be anchored on nano/micro-patterned surfaces or micron size para/ferromagnetic particles or with alternative technologies to generate an active surface inside a microfluidic set up.
Exceptional candidates of any nationality are eligible to apply, but they must not have spent more than one of the past three years in Germany and obtained their MS degree within the last four years.
The PhD candidates should have:
- A Master’s degree in physics or chemistry, or related disciplines from a recognized university.
- Interest in one or more of the following research areas: Fluid Physics, Biophysics, Physical Chemistry, Soft Matter Physics and Condensed Matter Physics.
- Strong quantitative skills (data analysis, programming).
- Ability and desire to work in a multi-disciplinary international team.
We are soliciting applications for PhD research in the the MaMi Innovative Training Network (ITN). MaMi is an EU-sponsored Marie Skłodowska-Curie network that will generously fund 15 PhD positions in France, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Slovenia and Spain, starting in September 2018. The aim is to catalyze a new field, coupling magnetic forces with bio-inspired local flow control, thereby creating new concepts that will transform microfluidics. The structured three-year PhD projects will include internships to partner laboratories, and industrial work experience. Salary and working hours are in accordance with the funding guidelines of the EU.
